Highland dancing is a very ancient form, having been described by a Roman writer who reported seeing men in “dresses” dancing around swords. The forms have been preserved almost exactly and can be performed by both men and women. Often seen in combination with Highland dances are the national dances designed to be done by women and danced in dresses and more recently kilts.
Dancers compete at various Scottish games held in many parts of the country and work very hard to gain recognition in their class. Dances are performed to the accompaniment of the bagpipe and drum.
